Practical Necessities at The GunneryAll articles of personal bedding, blankets, linens, etc. should be plainly and permanently marked with the owner's name. Our living situation here is one which does not necessitate either large sums of money or valuable possessions. We cannot forbid the use of expensive equipment or the possession of too much cash, but we cannot be responsible for their loss. The Gunnery does provide door locks on every dormitory room for security, but it is recommended to have a small lock box for valuables. Each room is furnished by the School with the basic necessities. There is also ample provision for decoration and electrical devices, so we ask that occupants of these rooms do not tape, nail, or tack their hangings onto, or into, the walls or doors. We request non-permanent adhesives. As mandated by fire safety regulations, refrigerators, TV sets, electric heaters, popcorn poppers, hot-pots, game-type systems, and large fans are prohibited. Note: Small desk fans are permitted, and RAs, HTGs and prefects may keep small refrigerators. Students are permitted to have their own personal computers. For details about personal computers, please refer to the letter from our Director of Technology. Cellular phones are permitted in rooms only or off campus. Finally, School authorized extension cords - 6 foot heavy-duty cords - limited to one per student, can be purchased through the School Store. Don't bring more than you need! Storage space is minimized by new fire regulations and none of our rooms are large enough to accommodate superfluous items. LaundryIn planning your school wardrobe, it is important to remember the optional laundry service schedule. The laundry is picked up on Monday and returned on Friday of the same week. Thus, a student should have adequate clothing for a two-week period. In addition, there are coin-operated washer and dryer facilities in the basement of Brinsmade, Bourne, Van Sinderen, Gibson, Gunn Dorms which may be used by students. AllowancesA personal account may be set up at the School Store/Bank on Registration Day from which to draw allowances. Insofar as there is little to spend one's money on while The Gunnery is in session, $50 seems an adequate (and average) weekly supply of cash to budget, with $100 per trip recommended for travel expenses for those occasional weekends away from school in addition to bus, cab, or airline fares. Any amount withdrawn over $50 weekly must be signed off by the Dean of Students. The account is maintained through the School Store. If you have any questions about the account you can call the School Store Manager, Deborah Doody, 860-868-7334 X223 or doodyd@gunnery.org.
