The evening of January 23 was chilly outside, but the Student Center was warm and bustling as musicians set up and tuned their instruments and the cooks of the International Club set up their dessert table for the Winter Term Coffee House.

Seven of the international students who accompanied Rod and Karoline Theobald on the annual trip to Boston this year wrote essays about their impressions of the city and the planned activities. They visited Harvard University and the museums there, walked the city and the Freedom Trail, shopped in Quincy Market, tried some of the famous restaurants, and took in the Big Apple Circus.

The Gunnery International Club and their guests celebrated Chinese New Year with a dinner at Conroy House on January 29th, an annual and much anticipated event. The delicious food and time with friends and faculty was welcomed by all in this busy winter term.

Once again the International Club prepared a tree for the Gunn Library’s annual fundraiser, the Festival of Trees, held on Friday, December 5. The theme for this year’s entry was “An International Christmas.” The tree was festooned with flags from the countries of origin of our international students, and goodies from Germany and Taiwan were piled underneath thanks to International Club members.

Each year graduation is a bittersweet time. It is exciting when students achieve their goals and move on to their next challenges; however, The Gunnery loses its seniors, a great resource for information and advice. This year we have interviewed a few of them to share some of the wisdom of what they have learned during their years here on campus.

On Friday, March 30, eleven international students set out with Mr. and Mrs. Theobald for the annual weekend trip to Boston for educational, cultural, and, of course, shopping fun. The first stop was the Institute of Contemporary Art which is housed in a new building designed by Diller Scofidio and Renfro and located on the waterfront. The exhibit “Super Vision” was a collection of works by 27 international artists which provided students with a different perspective of their modern world. Alvaro Carreras ’07 particularly enjoyed the visit and the ten-foot tall bronze “Spider” by Louise Bourgeois. Hong Jae Park ’07 liked the metallic “Rabbit” by Jeff Koons that reflected the world for him in new ways.

There are many different options for sports to play in the winter term, but I had already decided what to do in the winter term before I came to The Gunnery. Having participated in the sport in Europe for 12 years, I love to ski, and it was one of several reasons why I chose to attend this school so I participated in the Gunnery’s ski program this year.

It may have been April Fool’s Weekend, but it was fun of a different kind that the group of seventeen international students and their chaperones Mr. and Mrs. Theobald were seeking in Boston and Cambridge, Massachusetts. With a Cambridge hotel as their base, this energetic group made the most of this cultural and historical center.

The evening was cool and damp, but the lights blazed brightly from the windows of Conroy House as international students arrived for the Lunar New Year’s dinner hosted by Mrs. Graham. Festive red dragons festooned the piano and fireplace mantel where students and teachers welcomed the Year of the Dog on January 28, 2006.

On Saturday, January 28th thirty-five children and their parents at the Gunn Memorial Junior library learned first hand about the traditions and meaning of the Asian Lunar New Year from members of The Gunnery's International Club and the Community Service Group. Attendance at this annual event has grown substantially in the four years since its inception.

Recently the Wykeham Room at the local Gunn Library was filled with sparkling lights and pine scent as Gunnery students bustled about, putting the finishing touches on their tree, titled “International Sweet Treats and Treasures.” As a community service project, the International Club decorated and donated a tree to the Gunn Library’s Festival of Trees, held on Friday, December 2, 2005. This year’s tree is hung with Korean and Chinese candies, Japanese origami, German chocolates and cookies and Australian koala bear, wombat, and kangaroo figurines.

Proving that the sport of ping-pong is alive and well at The Gunnery, international student Richard Huang has earned the title of Ping-Pong Champion this fall term.

When Mrs. Graham made her announcement on October 5 during the all-school meeting in the EPAC, there was a buzz of excitement. Soon, the new international students realized why: the all-school walk was scheduled for October 6.

It was an intrepid group who braved the heavy rain to attend Saturday’s international dinner and movie, but all agreed that it was well worth the effort. It might have been damp outside, but the company was animated in the Theobalds’ apartment.

On Friday, September 30, 2005, Marcia Zhou '06 of The Gunnery joined the Shepaug High School East/West classes to translate for their visitors, Linzhong Wu, Chairman of the Donghing Youth Federation in Shandong, China, and Li Zheng, Deputy Director of Shandong Provincial Sports Bureau.

Twelve students from The Gunnery’s International Club shared their Valentine’s Day with 53 eager young participants and their parents at The Gunn Memorial Junior Library.

Appropriately, the first program of 2004 given by The Gunnery’s International Club at the Gunn Memorial Junior Library celebrated the Chinese New Year with a craft workshop.

To tempt the taste buds of The Gunnery community, the International Club joined forces with the Coffee House crew to produce an International Dessert Night to accompany the evening of music, stories and poetry on January 24th.

On Wednesday, December 10, 2003, four members of the International Club visited the Primes (2nd grade) class at Rumsey Hall School as part of their Independent Study Program (ISP) for the winter term.

International Dinners have always been my favorite dinners at The Gunnery: better food, free soda, air conditioning, and a nice couch. But what makes International Dinners so special is that they give you a chance to hang out with your friends whom you seldom see on the weekdays, and they introduce you to new people at the same time.

A new school year is always lively with many activities and much anticipation; but, when you’re coming thousands of miles and several time zones as Gunnery’s international students do, it is particularly full of tasks, new faces and adjustments. Whether you are new or returning, there is plenty to do!
