Gunnery Crew Wins at The Braxton
11/16/2009

Gunnery crew traveled to Philadelphia this past weekend to compete in the Bill Braxton Memorial Regatta, held on the Schuylkill River on Sunday November 15.  This 1500 meter sprint race brings together mainly Philadelphia and mid-Atlantic teams; Gunnery is one of only a handful of New England teams to compete.  The boys’ varsity squad, champion in their event last year, was joined this year for the first time by the girls’ team.  The Varsity High School 4 events for boys and girls are the largest of the regatta by far, with thirty schools competing in each event.  Six Gunnery boats (three for the boys and three for the girls) entered the morning heats, racing for spots in the midday semi-finals.  All three boys’ boats as well as the girls’ 1st boat advanced to race again.  Moving out of the heats can be challenging – most teams enter only a first boat so second and third boats need significant speed to be competitive.
