Gunnery Students Shine in Local Art Show

Students in the visual arts department have seen a renaissance in painting, sculpture, and other mixed media projects in the last few weeks.  This past March, they showcased their works at The Kent Art Association’s annual student exhibition. Recently, they presented at the New Talent Gallery at Hunt Hill Farm’s Silo Gallery in New Milford.

Katrina Kiritharan ’10 was one of eleven Gunnery students who participated in the Kent exhibition from February 27th through March 7th. Her pen and ink drawing entitled “Henna on Flowers” won first prize in that category.  “The kids were really excited. Katrina’s entire family came to the (Kent) awards ceremony,” said faculty member, Andrew Richards. “I took some kids to see the show as well.” 

Other students submitting art work in the Kent Show included: Hallie Bonnar ‘10, Chaoyang Liu ‘11, Justin Charles ‘10, Kaitlyn McNamara ‘13, Lauren Beardsley ‘10, Lexie Lipham ‘10, Danielle Tunkel ‘11, Dan Zoldy ‘10, Rebecca Yaworski ‘10, and Rebecca Jean-Baptiste ‘11.  This year, nine schools participated in the show including: Millbrook, Trinity Pawling, Dover High School, Webatuck High School, New Fairfield High School, Kent School, South Kent School, and Marvelwood School.

Davia Kennedy Fink, executive director and Connie Horton past president were the coordinators of the show and Peter Seltzer and Frank Federico were the judges. A reception was held on February 27th to honor the prize winners and open this first show of Kent Art Association’s 2010 season.

“It’s always important to get the student’s work up,” said Andy. “We have three shows going on, including The Gunnery’s Art & Letters Celebration.” 

Sixteen students are participating in the Silo Gallery exhibit which runs from April 3rd through May 9th with an opening reception on April 10th. Interested people may want to attend the gallery talk the students and their teacher will be giving on Sunday, April 18th. Below is a listing of participating students.
