The Gunnery Baseball Program has had a long and successful tradition. Baseball was one of the earliest sports established at Mr. Gunn’s school in 1858. The village green by the Washington First Congregational Church was the site of the first known photograph of a baseball game in 1869 between The Gunnery and New Milford teams and served as the inside cover to Ken Burn’s book and documentary “Baseball- An Illustrated History”. The Gunnery competes in the New England Prep Baseball League with Berkshire, Canterbury, Cheshire, Millbrook, Pomfret, Salisbury, Suffield, Wilbraham & Monson, and Williston-Northhampton. The program has consistently finished near the top of the league standings and captured the league championship in 2004, 2007 and 2009. Gunnery baseball players have gone on to compete at the NCAA Division I, II, and III levels and a few have even continued their careers in professional baseball. Each year the program spends a week of spring training in Florida and also plays a game at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown, New York at the home of the Baseball Hall of Fame. The program’s philosophy is a very simple one: to improve each day and to play hard and play smart, while developing a respect for the game itself. Through this philosophy a player is able to learn the game and best prepare himself to play at the next level, if that is his ambition.
